About Us
Syn-Mar has been manufacturing grout-free showers and vanity tops since 1977, with a focus on custom fit, consistent quality, and dependable service.
Our History
Syn-Mar Products was founded in 1977 by Richard “Dick” and Mary Patricia “Pat” Hill. With a background in sales, Dick recognized an emerging opportunity in the cultured marble industry after attending a manufacturing seminar in Hartford, Connecticut. At the time, the market was highly competitive, but to Dick, that signaled strong demand. From the beginning, his focus was simple: build a better product and deliver better service.
In those early years, Syn-Mar was truly a family effort. With five children to support, Dick and Pat worked tirelessly to grow the business, and each of their children contributed along the way. Among them, their son Tim Hill developed a strong passion for the company and its future.
In 1996, Tim purchased the business from his father and assumed day-to-day leadership. Operating out of a modest facility in Ellington, Connecticut, Syn-Mar steadily expanded, adding space where possible and continuing to refine its operations.
In the early 2000s, Tim’s brother, Ken Hill, joined the company as Director of Sales and Marketing. Ken played an important role in shaping the company’s commercial strategy by streamlining sales efforts, strengthening marketing initiatives, and helping establish the foundation for Syn-Mar’s continued growth. He remained in this role until 2022.
A major milestone came in 2008, when Syn-Mar moved into its current 15,000-square-foot facility in Ellington. For the first time, the entire operation was brought under one roof, creating efficiencies and positioning the company for future expansion.
In 2012, Syn-Mar acquired Roma Marble, a well-established competitor in the region. This acquisition significantly expanded the company’s footprint from Connecticut and Western Massachusetts to all of New England. While the transition came with challenges, it ultimately strengthened Syn-Mar’s position as a leading manufacturer in the Northeast.
As the company has grown, so has its team, infrastructure, and reach. Investments in people, processes, and distribution have allowed Syn-Mar to better serve its expanding network of dealer partners across the region.
In 2018, third-generation family member Derek Hill joined the business full-time continuing a long standing family involvement. Starting in sales, he focused on developing relationships and expanding Syn-Mar’s presence throughout Northern New England. In 2022, he assumed responsibility for a broader territory, continuing to build on the company’s foundation while supporting its next phase of growth.
Today, Syn-Mar remains a family-owned and operated manufacturer, rooted in the same values it was founded on. With nearly five decades of experience behind it, the company continues to evolve while staying true to the principles that built it.
